What your router needs
- It must support VLAN tagging (802.1Q) on the WAN – this is the one requirement most older routers fail
- It must have a WAN / internet Ethernet port for the fibre box (ONT)
- It must not be locked to another provider – ex-Spark, ex-Vodafone/One NZ and ex-Sky routers often are
- Gigabit WAN and LAN ports if you are on 500 Mbps or faster; a Hyperfibre plan needs a 2.5 Gbps or faster WAN port
The ASH NET settings
The same settings apply on every fibre plan and every fibre company (Chorus, Enable, Tuatahi First Fibre and Northpower). There is no username or password – we stopped using PPPoE in January 2026.

How to set it up
- Plug the router in near the fibre box and turn it on.
- Run an Ethernet cable from the router's WAN / internet port to the activated port on the fibre box (ONT) – the port is named in your activation email and normally has a light beside it.
- Connect a computer or phone to the router by cable or Wi-Fi. If you are using a phone, turn mobile data off (or put it in flight mode with Wi-Fi on) so it does not fall back to the mobile network.
- Open the router's settings page and sign in, then set the internet connection to DHCP and tag the internet VLAN as 10 – pick your brand below for the exact menu names.
- Save and give the router a minute or two to reconnect, then open a website to test.
Not sure your router can do VLAN tagging? Look for a menu called IPTV/VLAN, 802.1Q, VLAN or an ISP profile with a "New Zealand UFB" option. If none of those exist, the router will not work on fibre no matter what else you change.
