Connection settings for your own router (DHCP / Dynamic IP + VLAN 10)

Any router that can do a DHCP (Dynamic IP) connection with VLAN tagging works on ASH NET fibre. These are the only settings you need – there is no username or password.

Connection / WAN typeDHCP – also called Dynamic IP, Automatic IP, Obtain an IP address automatically or IPoE
VLAN taggingEnabled, VLAN ID 10 (priority 0)
Username / passwordNone – ASH NET does not use PPPoE
IPv6Automatic (SLAAC / DHCPv6) if your router offers it
CableRouter WAN (or Internet) port → the fibre box (ONT) LAN port named in your activation email, usually LAN1
Wi-Fi, DNS, LAN addressesAnything you like – leave the router’s defaults

ASH NET retired PPPoE in January 2026. If your router is still set to PPPoE with a username and password, change it to DHCP / Dynamic IP – a PPPoE router will not connect.

Step by step

  1. Connect the router’s WAN port to the ONT LAN port named in your activation email with an Ethernet cable, and power both on.
  2. Connect a laptop or phone to the router (cable or its default Wi-Fi) and open the router’s admin page – the address and login are on its label (often 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254).
  3. In the internet / WAN settings choose DHCP (Dynamic IP / Automatic). Remove any PPPoE username and password.
  4. Find the VLAN setting – it may be on the WAN page, or under IPTV/VLAN, Internet VLAN, 802.1Q or ISP profile. Enable it and enter VLAN ID 10. Some routers offer a preset for New Zealand fibre (for example TP-Link Deco’s New Zealand UFB) that does the same thing.
  5. Save and let the router reboot. Within a minute or two its internet light should turn on and the WAN status should show an IP address.

Step-by-step menus for 35 brands are on the BYO router settings pages, with a short version in VLAN 10 settings by router brand. Bought the router from another provider? Old Spark, One NZ/Vodafone and Sky routers are often locked to that provider’s settings and will not accept ours even when set correctly – it is usually quicker to replace them.

Not connecting?

  • Check the cable is in the ONT port named in your email (LAN1, LAN2 or LAN3 – transfers are sometimes provisioned on a different port).
  • Check the ONT lights: Power solid, PON/Optical solid, the LAN port blinking. A red light means a line fault – see Fibre box (ONT) lights.
  • Turn the router off for 10 minutes and back on so the old address expires.
  • Activations happen at the scheduled time in your activation email, not first thing in the morning.
  • Still down? Send us the router make and model (or a photo of its label) and what the lights show – we can see from our side whether the router has picked up an address, and we will email you screenshots for your model.
