Setting up your home phone (landline) on fibre

An ASH NET home phone is a VoIP line – calls travel over your fibre connection. Your ordinary corded or cordless handset plugs into the ASH NET VoIP router, not into the fibre box.

Plugging in

  1. Set up the TP-Link VX230v router as normal (see Setting up your ASH NET router) and wait until it is online.
  2. Plug your handset (or the base of your cordless phone) into the port marked Phone 1 / TEL1 on the back of the VX230v.
  3. Pick up the handset – you should hear a dial tone within a minute of the router being online. Make a test call.

Never plug a phone into the TEL port on the fibre box (ONT). It is not connected to our phone service and nothing will happen.

Using your own equipment

If you would rather use an IP phone, a VoIP adapter (ATA – for example a Grandstream HT801/HT802) or the Secure VoIP app instead of the VX230v, we will give you the SIP details for your number – see VoIP settings for your SIP phone, adapter or app. The HX510 router has no phone port.

What is included

Caller ID, voicemail, call waiting and call forwarding are included with every line. Dial *55 from the handset to set up voicemail – see Voicemail and Star codes.

Power cuts and 111

Fibre and VoIP need power, so the phone stops working in a power cut unless the router and fibre box are on a battery backup (UPS). Keep a charged mobile for 111 calls. If someone in your home must be able to call 111 at all times for medical, disability or safety reasons, tell us – under the 111 Contact Code we provide eligible customers with a suitable backup. See our 111 Contact Code page.

No dial tone?

  1. Check the router has power and internet (a device on its Wi-Fi can browse).
  2. Check the phone cable is in Phone 1, not a LAN port, and that the handset is charged and its base has power.
  3. Turn the router off for 30 seconds and back on; wait two minutes.
  4. Still nothing? Log a ticket in the customer portal or email [email protected] with the time of a failed call and the number you dialled.
