Testing your speed properly

Wi-Fi almost never shows the full plan speed – the laptop or phone’s Wi-Fi capability, distance, walls and interference all reduce it. To measure the connection itself:

  1. Connect a laptop to LAN1 on the router with an Ethernet cable (gigabit port, Cat5e or Cat6 cable) and turn the laptop’s Wi-Fi off.
  2. Make sure nothing else is downloading, streaming or backing up, and that no VPN is running.
  3. Install the Speedtest by Ookla desktop app from speedtest.net/apps (the browser version is limited on fast plans), choose the Chorus Fiber Lab server manually and run the test.
  4. Send us a screenshot with your router model if the result is well below your plan.

Expected results

PlanTypical cabled result (Mbps)
Home Fibre 100around 100 down / 20 up
Home Fibre 500around 500 down / 100 up
Home Fibre 920 (including 920 PRO and Connect)around 920 down / 500 up
Hyperfibre 2000 / 4000 / 8000needs a 2.5–10 Gbps Ethernet port on the laptop and router to see more than about 940 Mbps

Slow on Wi-Fi only?

Move closer to the router or use the 5 GHz band, put the router somewhere central and elevated, and cable TVs, consoles and desktops. If the house needs more coverage, add a mesh unit – see Wi-Fi coverage and mesh. Also turn off QoS or bandwidth limits on the router, and restart both the ONT and the router.

All ASH NET fibre plans are unlimited with no speed throttling; the fair-use clause in our terms only covers excessive or unusual use.
