The fibre box on your wall – the ONT (optical network terminal) – belongs to the fibre company (Chorus, Enable, Tuatahi First Fibre or Northpower). It converts the fibre to Ethernet; your router plugs into it. Labels differ slightly by model, but the lights work the same way.
| Light | Normal | If it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Solid green | Off: no power – check the adapter and the wall switch |
| PON / Optical / Fibre | Solid green | Flashing: trying to sync with the exchange; off: no fibre signal – contact us |
| LOS / Alarm | Off | Red or flashing red: loss of signal – a fault on the fibre line. Contact us and we will lodge it with the fibre company |
| LAN1–LAN4 | Blinking on the port your router uses | Off on the port named in your activation email: check the cable, or you may be provisioned on a different port |
| TEL / POTS | Off | Not used – ASH NET home phones plug into the VoIP router, never the ONT |
Which port?
Your activation email or SMS names the ONT port – usually LAN1. When you transfer from another provider we sometimes provision you on LAN2 or LAN3 so your old service keeps working until we go live; move the cable to the port named in the email at the scheduled time. If the Chorus text and our email name different ports, contact us before changing anything.
Restarting the ONT
Restarting the ONT is rarely needed – restart the router first. If you do, switch the ONT off at the wall for 30 seconds; it takes a couple of minutes to re-sync (PON light flashing, then solid).
Red light
A red optical/LOS light means the fibre line itself has a problem – nothing you do with the router will fix it. Contact us with what the lights show and we will raise a fault with the fibre company; a technician usually visits the next working day and will normally call first. If the light comes right before the visit, let us know so we can cancel the technician and avoid a call-out charge.
Moving or replacing the ONT
Only the fibre company can move or replace the ONT – ASH NET cannot move the fibre cable. Chorus charges to move a box within the home; ask us and we will lodge the request and pass on their quote. Hyperfibre needs a Hyperfibre-capable ONT – see Hyperfibre – router and fibre box requirements.
