Wi-Fi coverage, dead spots and mesh

Placement first

  • Put the router in a central, elevated, open spot – not in a cupboard, behind the TV or next to the fridge or microwave.
  • Thick walls (brick, concrete, tiles) and metal cut the signal most.
  • Use 5 GHz for nearby devices (faster) and 2.4 GHz for distant ones (further reach, slower).
  • Cable TVs, consoles and desktop computers where you can – it frees up the Wi-Fi for everything else.

Only seeing 5 GHz near the router?

Some routers hide the bands behind band steering or smart connect, which moves distant devices onto 2.4 GHz. Turn that off in the router app if you want both networks visible, or connect to the 2.4 GHz name when you are further away.

Add a mesh unit

If placement is not enough, add a second HX510 as a mesh unit (same price as the main router, plus shipping). It joins the same Wi-Fi name: in the Aginet app choose Add Agent (EasyMesh) and follow the prompts, placing the unit roughly halfway between the router and the dead spot – where the signal is still good. Deco systems add units with + Add Deco in the Deco app; Hyperfibre customers on the Halo H47BE add more Halo units in the MERCUSYS app.

Wi-Fi extenders and powerline adapters

Cheap extenders halve the speed and create a second network name – a mesh unit is almost always better. Powerline adapters work in some houses but depend on the wiring.
